According to news reports, the CDC estimates that one in four teenage girls (aged 13-17) got the HPV vaccine last year. Gardasil protects against two of the most common types of cancer causing HPV, as well as two of the types most often responsible for causing genital warts. Despite some inflammatory news reports, the vaccine appears to be safe, and the fact that it has already reached such high coverage levels is a very good sign. Other non-mandatory vaccines that have been around much longer are not nearly as well received. I guess all the controversy has been good for something after all...
