Plenty of Syph

I love the Alberta anti-syphilis ad campaign Plenty of Syph, both because it's a brilliant parody of the Plenty of Fish website and because it actually seems to be working. Testing for syphilis has gone up substantially since the campaign was first released in March, which is great news since Canadian syphilis numbers have been seriously on the rise. That rate increase is particularly frightening for public health officials since the rise in adult cases is also reflected in a growing number of congenital syphilis cases... and a corresponding increase in the number of infant deaths.

Fortunately, the Alberta campaign seems to be a rousing success, and other Canadian provinces are planning on implementing similar measures to increase the number of individuals who are getting screened. Screening is critical for syphilis prevention, since infections are easily missed in their early stages even when sores are present. It's also worth mentioning that another factor which may be contributing to the increase in syphilis cases is that many people don't practice protected oral sex. Few people realize that syphilis can be spread by oral sex, and so oral encounters are rarely considered to be a risky endeavor.
