For Science We Give Thanks

To lighten things up a bit after Thanksgiving, I want to call your attention to a study that has finally proven two things that I have long suspected. Sex is fun. Facebook makes people miserable. The research was performed by a postdoctoral psychology student at the University of Canterbury, in New Zealand, who randomly text messaged people throughout the day and asked them to rate a number of common activities in terms of pleasure, happiness, meaning, and engagement. Looking at the happiness measure, having sex was at the top of the list, followed closely by drinking and partying (although you shouldn't do both together.) Facebook, on the other hand, was almost at the bottom of the list. The only thing that made people more miserable was being sick. (Facebook also scored 25th out of 30 items on "meaning" - something that should surprise no one who has ever read a page full of status updates describing what their friends ate for breakfast.)
