Definition: Whereas in a monogamous relationship two people agree to remain sexually exclusive with one another, in an open relationship there is an agreement that either or both partners may have sexual relationships with other people.

Open Relationships come in many forms. Some open relationships only permit casual sexual encounters with other partners outside the main relationship, while others encourage meaningful emotional bonds with outside partners as well as sex.

Establishing an open relationship, like establishing a monogamous relationship, requires specific negotiation between the parties involved. It is important for everyone involved in an open relationship to know that they are in an open relationship since having multiple partners does increase a person's STD risk. This risk can be minimized by consistent practice of safe sex with all partners, and regular STD screening.

Also Known As: swinging, polyamory
Examples:
Swingers engage in one form of open relationship. Swinging usually consists of heterosexual couples who swap partners with other couples in each others company. Unfortunately, much of swinger culture does not incorporate strong standards of safe sex and STD testing.
