Definition: The acute phase of an illness is usually characterized by:
  • sudden onset
  • severity/intensity
    and/or
  • brief duration

as opposed to chronic

Examples: The symptoms of acute Hepatitis B normally resolve within a few weeks or months. Chronic Hepatitis B, however, is a lifelong condition.
