Definition: An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that implants outside of the uterus, most frequently in one of the fallopian tubes. Such a pregnancy cannot be carried safely to term. Normally such a pregnancy aborts on its own; this is called a tubal abortion. However if it doesn't, and it remains undetected, the fallopian tube could rupture as the pregnancy continues. This could require emergency surgery and potentially endanger the mother's life.
Also Known As: tubal pregnancy
