How Common is It?
Approximately 1% of pregnant women in the U.S. are infected with gonorrhea.

Effect on Pregnancy Outcome:
Gonorrhea is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. Although gonorrhea can cause eye infections in infants, treatment with prophylactic eye drops is routine in most areas of the United States and very effective. Other types of systemic gonorrhea infections in infants are also possible, but rare.

Screening Recommendation:
High-risk women should be tested at their first prenatal visit and again during the third trimester. Aside from the usual risk-factors, a pregnant women is considered to be high risk if she lives in an area with a high prevalence of infection.

Treatment:
Treatment is done with antibiotics.
