Question: What Do I Need To Know About Trichomoniasis During Pregnancy?
Answer:

How Common is It?
5-12% of pregnant women in the U.S. are infected with trichomoniasis.

Effect on Pregnancy Outcome:
Trichomoniasis increases a woman’s risk of preterm birth and premature rupture of membranes. Women with symptomatic trichomoniasis also have an increased risk of having a low birth weight infant.

Screening Recommendation:
Screening is not recommended for asymptomatic women.

Treatment:
Symptomatic women should be treated for trichomoniasis, but the evidence is mixed as to whether there is any benefit to treating asymptomatic women. Some studies have shown that treating asymptomatic women leads to a reduction in risk, while others have found that it actually makes things worse.
